Full stump and root ball extraction for Spokane residential and commercial properties. When grinding isn’t enough, we go all the way down and haul everything out.
Stump removal goes beyond grinding: rather than chipping the stump down below grade, the entire stump and root ball are physically extracted from the ground. This is typically done using a combination of excavation equipment, a winch, or a backhoe, depending on root system size and depth.
The result is a clean void in the ground that can be backfilled with topsoil and prepared for new planting, sod, hardscape, or construction. There is no organic material left underground to decay or cause settling.
We evaluate stump size, soil type, and how extensively the roots have spread. Underground utilities are identified and marked before any work begins.
Roots are severed outward from the stump and the root ball is leveraged or lifted free of the ground. Larger jobs may require an excavator or skid steer.
The hole is backfilled with clean soil or fill material. Debris is hauled away, and the site is raked and graded so it is ready for the next phase of your project.

Full removal is the right choice if you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, install a concrete driveway or patio, lay irrigation lines through the area, or simply want nothing organic left underground. For all other situations, grinding is usually sufficient and more economical.
Full removal costs more than grinding because it requires heavier equipment and more labor. Prices depend on root system size, soil conditions, and site access. A typical residential stump removal takes 2–4 hours. Large trees with extensive root systems or stumps in restricted-access areas can take longer and may require additional equipment, which your provider will account for in the quote.
The hole left by extraction is backfilled with soil or clean fill material. Depending on the agreement, the provider may leave a slight mound to account for settling, or grade the area level. You can then lay sod, seed it, or prepare it for your next project.
Root systems from adjacent trees can overlap. An experienced provider will assess the site before beginning work to avoid unnecessary disturbance to surrounding landscape features. Let your provider know about any nearby plants you want to protect.
