How long does stump grinding take?

Most homeowners ask this so they know whether to be home or take time off work. The short answer: a typical residential job runs 1 to 2 hours. But that range hides a lot, and a few factors push it in either direction.

The main factors that drive grinding time

Stump diameter is the single biggest variable. A 10-inch ornamental tree stump and a 30-inch cottonwood are not remotely the same job. The grinding head makes overlapping passes across the stump in a sweeping motion, so the area covered goes up fast with diameter. A stump that is twice as wide is more than twice as much work.

Wood density is second. Cottonwood, poplar, and fruit trees (apple, cherry) grind quickly. They are soft, wet wood. Black locust, oak, and elm are hard, dry, and wear through grinding teeth. A 16-inch cottonwood stump might take 30 minutes. A 16-inch locust stump might take an hour and a half. Same diameter, very different jobs.

Site access matters more than most homeowners expect. A stump in an open backyard reachable from a wide gate is fast to set up and work around. A stump wedged against a fence line, on a slope, or only reachable through a 30-inch gate slows the job down. It is not that it can't be done, it just takes more positioning.

Surface roots add time separately from the main stump. Some trees, especially older cottonwoods and silver maples, push roots along the surface that radiate several feet out from the base. If those need grinding too, that is additional passes and additional time. Make sure you clarify the full scope when you get your quote.

Time ranges by stump size

These are actual grinding time estimates, not total visit time. Add 30 to 45 minutes to any of these for arrival, setup, assessment, and cleanup.

Small stumps (under 10 inches)

Ornamental trees, small fruit trees, shrub stumps. Grinding usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. The total visit is typically under an hour.

Medium stumps (12 to 18 inches)

The most common residential job. A mature fruit tree or mid-size maple. Grinding takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on wood type and depth. Budget 1.5 to 2 hours for the full visit.

Large stumps (20 to 30 inches)

Older cottonwoods, large silver maples, elms. Grinding runs 1.5 to 3 hours. Allow half a day for the visit if surface roots are also in scope.

Very large stumps (30 inches and up)

Old-growth hardwoods and large cottonwoods. These can run 3 to 5 hours of grinding. Rare in residential yards but they do show up in Spokane's older neighborhoods. Get a site visit quote on these, not a phone estimate.

Multiple stumps: it gets more efficient

If you have several stumps, scheduling them together is worth it. The equipment gets loaded and driven out once. Setup happens once. Grinding each subsequent stump is just the grinding time for that stump without the overhead of another mobilization trip.

As a rough guide: three average residential stumps (12 to 16 inches each, decent wood) will take a full morning. Five stumps might take a full day. It varies more once you mix in different sizes and wood types, so give a complete list when you call for a quote rather than just asking about the largest one.

Many providers offer a per-stump discount on jobs with four or more stumps precisely because the mobilization cost is spread across more work. Ask about that when you call.

What the full visit actually looks like

The clock starts before grinding does. When the crew arrives, they will walk the job with you, confirm the stumps in scope, check for utility flags (call 811 before any stump grinding job to have underground lines marked), and position equipment. That process takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on job complexity.

Grinding itself is loud and fast. The cutting wheel throws wood chips several feet, so the crew will direct the spray away from structures and people. Once the stump is ground to the agreed depth, the hole gets raked. Chips fill most of the void, and the area is left reasonably level.

If you requested chip removal as an add-on, that takes additional time. Loading wood chip debris into a trailer or truck bed adds 15 to 30 minutes depending on volume.

You should plan to be home when the crew arrives. Point out access notes, confirm scope, and flag anything you want them to know. After that, you do not have to stand and watch. The crew works through the job and you will hear when it is done.

A note on Spokane tree types

The most common stumps in Spokane and the Valley are silver maple, cottonwood, and fruit trees. All three are on the faster end of the grinding spectrum. Cottonwood in particular grinds quickly. If that is what you have, lean toward the shorter end of any time estimate you get.

Black locust grows semi-wild in some parts of Spokane County and shows up in older residential lots. It is one of the hardest native woods in the region. If the tree you had taken down was a locust, mention it. It changes the quote and the time estimate.

Pine, tamarack, and cedar are common in properties closer to the foothills. They grind faster than hardwoods. The stumps can be large in diameter but the wood is soft and the work moves quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How long does stump grinding take for an average residential stump?

A stump in the 12 to 18 inch range takes 45 to 90 minutes of grinding depending on wood type and depth. The full visit, including setup and cleanup, usually runs 1.5 to 2.5 hours. For smaller ornamental stumps, the visit can be under an hour.

Does the type of tree affect how long it takes?

Yes, significantly. Cottonwood, poplar, and fruit trees grind fast. Black locust, oak, and elm are dense and take more passes. Same diameter, different species, different job. Mention the tree type when you call for a quote so you get an accurate estimate.

Do I need to be home the entire time?

You should be there when the crew arrives to walk through the job, confirm access, and address any questions. Once grinding starts, you do not need to stay. The crew works independently and will let you know when done.

How much longer does it take with multiple stumps?

Each stump adds its own grinding time but shares the setup and mobilization. Three average stumps in one yard typically run 3 to 4 hours for the full visit. It is far more efficient than three separate appointments.

Does grinding depth affect how long it takes?

Yes. Standard depth is 4 to 6 inches below grade, which is enough for most lawns. If you need deeper grinding (for a garden bed or construction prep), that adds passes and time. Ask about it specifically when you schedule.
